AI is often used as an umbrella term for several technologies that together create complex, automated workflows, such as machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing (NLP). A stricter definition, on the other hand, uses AI to refer only to technology that partially programs itself. For example, this could be the completely independent development of code to recognize image content and automatically provide a text description.
Since AI is not one single technology but refers to the property of acting on its own to a large extent, there is no single mode of operation. In IT, however, a distinction is made between weak and strong AI. Weak AI refers to systems that can simulate cognitive capabilities, such as vision or hearing. This can be used to solve predefined tasks, such as reading texts out loud to make them more accessible. Strong AI refers to systems that have complex capabilities that resemble human thinking. Such systems can, for example, independently recognize and analyze problems. Powerful AI can even surpass the skills and knowledge of humans in some areas, such as detecting breast cancer from mammogram images. This is especially the case where frequent repetitions, large, very similar data sets and the evaluation of the tiniest details increase the frequency of human errors.
In IT, we usually speak of weak or strong AI (see above). Some people distinguish between four sub-areas of AI: purely reactive AI, limited memory AI, theory of mind AI, and self-aware AI. Purely reactive AI is largely congruent with weak AI. Limited memory makes us aware of the limitations of AI, whether weak or strong. This is because every AI can only work based on the data provided and the available storage capacity – and is, thus, limited from the outset by fixed restrictions. Theory of mind and self-aware are not real forms of AI but address philosophical issues. Theory of mind plays with the idea of whether technology could interact socially and also possess sentience itself. Self-aware goes one step further and considers whether systems could perceive themselves and define themselves as an independent ‘I’.
Our core is the development of artificial intelligence. To this end, our experts repeatedly collaborate with university researchers. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding two of our current research projects on improving work processes through AI.
