Taking Responsibility Means Securing the Future

Employee-owned companies strengthen employee participation and ensure business succession. In this interview, Wibke Jellinghaus, Chair of the Arineo Foundation, discusses the opportunities this model offers and explains why steward ownership is a future-proof solution for many businesses.

Why is the foundation committed to employee-owned companies?

Wibke: Employee-owned companies can address some of the key challenges of our time. They encourage participation, secure business succession, and promote long-term responsibility without being driven by short-term external interests. At a time when many businesses are facing questions about their future, this model offers a way to maintain stability and independence. It ensures that decisions are made where they have the greatest impact: by the employees themselves.

What distinguishes the Arineo EOC model from other business models?

Wibke:
The key difference is that the focus is not on generating short-term returns or satisfying external shareholders. Instead, the company operates under steward ownership.

Profits primarily serve the company itself, its employees, and its long-term development. This model creates a clear legal framework for shared decision-making - going beyond company culture alone.

Who is this model particularly suited for?

Wibke:
It is especially attractive for companies considering succession planning while wanting to preserve their values and culture. Many business owners reach the end of their careers facing a choice: sell to investors or close the business. EOC provides a third option – transferring ownership to employees. It is also beneficial for growing companies that want to secure their independence. The model is flexible and works for both mid-sized businesses and larger organizations.

How does the foundation provide support?

Wibke:
We advise companies on developing an EOC strategy, answer questions about transitioning to steward ownership, and connect businesses with experts, networks, and existing EOC companies. In addition, we raise awareness through public outreach, organize presentations, and participate in industry events. We generate attention and help demonstrate that EOC is a practical, proven model. One example is the Arineo Group, which already operates successfully in line with these principles.

What role does the foundation play within the Arineo Group?

Wibke:
The foundation owns 100 percent of the shares in Arineo Holding GmbH and, therefore, also in Arineo GmbH. This means employees can permanently participate in shaping the company’s future, independent of external investors. It demonstrates in a very practical way that EOC is not just an idea – it is a business model that works in everyday practice.

You recently attended a parliamentary evening in Berlin. Why was that important?

Wibke:
It highlighted the growing political significance of steward ownership. During discussions with representatives from politics, academia, and business, the focus was on the proposed legislation for companies with locked assets. For us, it was an excellent opportunity to contribute Arineo’s perspective and demonstrate the importance of long-term stability for businesses.

Where do you see the future of EOC in Germany?

Wibke:
We are convinced that EOC will play an increasingly important role in the coming years. Demographic change, the large number of upcoming business successions, and the growing demand for sustainable business structures make this model highly attractive. As a foundation, our role is to support this development, make knowledge accessible, and encourage companies to place responsibility in their employees’ hands.

Responsibility that lasts

The Arineo Foundation supports employee-owned businesses and promotes steward ownership for the long term.
