Arineo Azubis beim Nachhaltigkeitsworkshop

More than just waste and climate. Sustainability in business.

MapsTell, values, sustainability - our trainees deal with many exciting topics in a series of workshops. In the "Sustainability in IT" workshop, they tested their knowledge, examined what sustainability means in a business context, and shared their own ideas and perspectives. Second-year apprentice Emil Pfirrmann gives us an insight into the day.

What does the term sustainability mean in a business context? We began with this question in the workshop, designed by Sophie Lau and Cornelius Köpper, for second-year trainees and dual students. They also invited our colleague Martin Renker from the management team, who is responsible for Arineo’s sustainability.

The definition of sustainability felt like a fresh perspective for all of us. In fact, climate or waste management and sustainability in relation to employees, social aspects, and economics are part of a sustainably organized company. A presentation by Sophie clarified this further.

ESG: The abbreviation stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. Behind it lies a comprehensive framework that includes criteria and guidelines through which organizations or companies can capture, analyze, and measure their sustainability efforts.

We also learned about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations back in 2015. The goals are directed toward all governments, civil society, the private sector, and academia. We discussed how objectives such as “gender equality” or “reduced inequalities” are reflected in our everyday lives. We also took a closer look at the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which includes guidelines for standardized reporting on a company’s sustainability.

A quiz on waste separation lightened up the content part. We actually thought we knew this well. However, it turned out that we often disagreed on which waste belonged in which bin and were surprised at how certain items should be disposed of. After lunch and fortified by a delicious meal, we tackled another quiz. This one was created by Cornelius, based on questions from the WISO final exam (WISO = Economics & Social Affairs), and tested our knowledge regarding IT sustainability. Finally, we discussed the structure of an actual final exam and moved on to the last part of the day.

Divided into two groups, we developed our own ideas for sustainability at Arineo and ranked them on a feasibility and sustainability efficiency scale. After about 45 minutes and a short break, we presented our results to all participants and discussed each point, which will also be shared with Martin. We focused on topics such as solar roofs, kindergartens, power switches for offices, and air conditioning, and we had many other ideas that could lead to better sustainability.

Our conclusion: the workshop was a very informative day that was also a lot of fun.
