The Göttingen-based IT service provider Arineo once again donated €5,000 to its long-standing donation project for first-year apprentices. This project serves multiple purposes for the company – it helps the young people get to know each other better through shared tasks and gives them a practical understanding of the processes behind even small-scale projects. It also highlights the importance of communication and transparency. Along the way, they also learn how companies can contribute to social cohesion by embracing social responsibility. “We are very impressed with how our trainees tackled the project – from selecting the organizations to managing the processes and presenting their work at a staff meeting,” says Eileen Zimbal, training manager at Arineo, praising the young colleagues’ approach.

The company employs seven first-year IT trainees specializing in application development at its offices in Göttingen and Butzbach. “I had an incredible amount of fun with this project. The best thing is looking back and realizing that you’ve helped others – it’s a great feeling,” says trainee Jan Kaufmann. After thorough research into the organizations, the young people allocated the donation funds to causes close to their hearts in Göttingen and Butzbach according to an ingenious system: Inklusiver Campus Duderstadt | Caritasverband Südniedersachsen e.V., Elternhilfe für das krebskranke Kind Göttingen e.V., Tierschutzverein Butzbach und Umgebung e.V., Tafel Butzbach e.V., Frauen helfen Frauen Wetterau e.V., Aktiv für Hunde in Not e.V. in Bovenden. “We were especially passionate about supporting the women’s shelter – such an important cause that unfortunately receives far too little support. We are all the more pleased to be able to make a contribution,” explains Helena Deiters, and Ole Ruhl (both first-year trainees) adds: “What makes this project special is its charitable nature – not only does it feel meaningful, but also a lot of fun to implement.”

The trainee donation project is an excellent opportunity to get to know each other better and to practice project management skills. The trainees are given a project brief at the start and then organize the rest themselves.

Jan Kaufmann explains how they proceeded this year:

They reviewed the project framework conditions, defined tasks, and assigned responsibilities. Then, everyone researched local projects and added their findings to a list. Weekly meetings were held to manage tasks and track progress, which included activities such as getting the bank details of the recipient organizations, coordinating with the accounting department, ensuring donation receipts were received, and presenting the project at a company-wide event.

How the donation amounts were decided

Each participant was given two votes when determining the amounts for the seven selected organizations, ensuring that another organization could be selected in addition to the one we nominated ourselves. The Caritas association in Göttingen receives a donation of €1,000 every year. The remaining €4,000 were split based on the 14 votes cast, each vote worth approx. €285. To determine the amount per organization, the number of votes for an organization was multiplied by €285. Final amounts were rounded for practicality or to meet minimum donation thresholds. The distribution was as follows:

We consciously selected charities that address essential needs in society. They directly help people in crises and actively support animal welfare.
