My first year of training | Jan Kaufmann | Part 2

How is the IT apprenticeship structured at Arineo? What does a typical working day look like for an application developer, and what personal qualities make the job enjoyable? In the second part of our interview, Jan Kaufmann gives a personal insight into his daily routine. He also shares his vision for the future after his apprenticeship.

How is training at Arineo structured?

Jan: The start at Arineo begins with excellent onboarding. We trainees are introduced step-by-step to everything: Time recording, teamwork, tools, systems – everything you need later in your daily work. And then we dive straight into programming.

First, we learn the basics: programming languages, variables, and object-oriented programming. Our first project was the AriGotchi – a digital Tamagotchi that we developed entirely ourselves. The name is a combination of Arineo and Tamagotchi. After that, things get really exciting. We founded a fictitious trainee company and work in it, like we would in a real software development project: with sprints, task distribution, and weekly status reports.

What area do you work in, and what happens after the first year of training?

Jan: I work in the customer experience department. We design online stores, discuss usability (i.e., user-friendliness), and implement key customer functionality. In our team, we handle data management in the background, explore the structure of an ERP system, and ensure that the store and ERP systems work together smoothly.

From the end of the second year of the apprenticeship and throughout the third year, we are involved in real customer projects. We receive specific assignments, take on responsible tasks, and implement our own solutions. This allows us to gain practical experience early on and learn what it’s like to work in real project teams.

What does a typical working day look like for you?

Jan: In the morning, I take a few minutes to plan the day: what’s coming up, which tickets (tasks) are open? Then I check our project management tool, prioritize my tasks, and get started. At Arineo, independent work is very important – so I decide how and when I approach my tasks, always keeping deadlines in mind. I’m currently developing our ERP system for the trainee company.

"ERP"

ERP stands for “Enterprise Resource Planning.” This refers to software that enables companies to centrally plan and manage key resources such as materials, time, money, and personnel. This is worth its weight in gold for businesses because it makes processes more transparent, faster, and more cost-effective.

My current project is a cashback points system for our store. Before that, I developed a service that automatically generates a delivery note for the corresponding order with a single click. Once a week, we hold a status meeting where we briefly discuss our current projects. This keeps everyone in the team up to date, and if there’s a problem somewhere, we help each other – either in the chat or directly with our trainer.

What skills help you as an application developer?

Jan: Here are a few qualities that I find super important – and that help me every day:

You dive deep into complex systems and translate processes into code – so it really helps if you enjoy solving puzzles and working in a structured way. I enjoy breaking down a problem step by step and arriving at a clean solution.

Initially, the world of programming languages and tools appears to be a vast jungle. But if you’re curious and excited about understanding a little more every day, the whole thing becomes an exciting journey. And the best part: the IT world is constantly evolving, and you never stop learning.

Not everything works immediately. Especially at the beginning, there are many moments when you think: “Why isn’t it working?” But with a bit of patience and the willingness to stick with it, you’ll get through even the toughest coding sessions. And the sense of achievement afterwards is great.

In your project work, you’re never on your own. You exchange ideas, and we help each other. If you communicate openly and enjoy working in a team, you can really drive the project forward. That’s especially great at Arineo – everyone is happy to help, and you really feel well taken care of.

What happens after the apprenticeship? In which areas can you work after completing your training?

Jan: My goal during the training? To absorb as much knowledge as possible! I want to build a solid foundation so that I can start my career as a developer after completing my training. Preferably directly at Arineo – I feel at home here and would like to use my knowledge in exciting customer projects.

But of course, learning doesn’t stop after the apprenticeship. Anyone who wants to can, for example, earn official Microsoft certifications or even pursue a degree in computer science. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be a developer job – with the right skills, you can also launch a career as an IT consultant or project manager. In those roles, you support customers as they install new software or organize entire project teams.

Future topics, such as artificial intelligence and IT security, are constantly evolving, creating exciting new areas in which you can continue to grow. With the knowledge you gain during the training, a lot of doors open for you.

Bliv en del af holdet. Reformer din karriere.

Lyder vi som et godt match? å send os din ansøgning i dag! Vi ser frem til at høre mere om dig og dine kvalifikationer.
