Dual study program as a career springboard: full-time job during both bachelor’s and master’s degree

Felix Horn is a working student at our Chemnitz office. He already knows his team and many of his tasks from his dual studies in business informatics at our company. He followed his bachelor's degree with a master's degree. Felix wanted to continue his work with us as a working student. In this interview, he explains how this helps him progress in his studies.

What particularly appealed to you about continuing with a master’s degree after your bachelor’s in business informatics?

Felix: I chose the master’s program in business intelligence and analytics because it builds well on my bachelor’s degree in business informatics. On the one hand, a higher academic degree was an important goal for me. On the other hand, I wanted to deepen my theoretical knowledge in certain areas of business informatics, especially in fields such as software development and AI, which I find particularly interesting and hope will benefit my professional career.

Are your current activities as a working student different from the ones you had during the practical phases of your dual study program?

Felix: In general, the tasks are similar, but I am now working on a different project, which has given me new insights. As during the bachelor’s program, the focus is on development tasks in the area of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations.

Have you gained new skills or knowledge that you didn’t have during your dual study program?

Felix: My master’s program builds on my bachelor’s degree in business informatics, allowing me to deepen many of the basics and also explore new topics – especially in the areas of data analysis, business intelligence, and AI. At Arineo, I was particularly able to expand my programming skills in practice.

Are there any projects you particularly enjoy working on?

Felix: I’m currently working on just one project where I perform the tasks already described.

I enjoy working on the project with my colleagues because it allows me to grow in this area. In addition to the project tasks, I also developed my own program within the project, which I really enjoyed.

Do your tasks help you with your studies?

Felix: Absolutely. My work as a student employee helps me better understand the content from the lectures, or sometimes a practical example or use case comes to mind. But most of all, I like applying theoretical knowledge from university in practice or seeing it in action, for example, in project management methods.

Do your activities influence your future career plans?

Felix: Yes, definitely. Working as a student employee has provided me with valuable insights into everyday work life. I feel well-prepared for my future career. It has also reinforced my decision to want to work long-term in this area.

How do you experience teamwork in your new role?

Felix: Compared to my time as a dual student, teamwork has only changed slightly as I now work in a smaller project team. Communication is straightforward, which makes me feel included fully.

Why would you recommend a dual study program or a student job to your fellow students?

Felix: II can recommend a dual study program or student job to all students, as it offers many benefits: you can apply what you learn during your studies in practice, get to know your future professional life, and build a professional network. Additionally, the job helps you better assess your own skills and develop them further. Another positive side effect is being paid for the work you do.
