Gerlinde describes her role as a link between two worlds: she understands client requirements, translates them into technical and specialist requirements, and then supports the implementation with developers.
"You have to understand what the client needs and pass that information on to development in a way they can work with,"
she explains. Only then does the reverse process come into play: jointly reviewing the solution and handing it over to the client in an understandable manner.
This is not just about technology, but also about specialist context. For Gerlinde, Finance is the area that “holds everything together.” It’s about processes, accounting, general ledger accounts, and correctly mapping legal and specialist requirements within the system.
No two days are alike
Gerlinde doesn’t really have a typical workday. Some topics can be planned, others come up ad hoc and need to be addressed quickly. The variety is what makes it appealing: sometimes an end-user question, sometimes a problem during testing, sometimes an urgent issue around reports or new Microsoft functionality. “Every day brings a little surprise about which topics arise,” she says. That’s what keeps the job alive for her.
Gerlinde finds new projects particularly exciting, especially because you don’t know how the client works and how the collaboration will initially develop. For her, this openness at the start is part of the role’s appeal.
“You wouldn’t believe it, but every project is completely different,” she says. Therefore, in her view, nothing can be easily transferred from one project to the next.
Communication is crucial
In her role, specialist knowledge is important, but not everything. For Gerlinde, a lot depends on whether you can really connect with each other. If clients are under pressure or don’t have time for an extensive discussion, a quick explanation won’t help. Other approaches are needed: documentation, short videos, or a dedicated meeting with space for the topic. “The most important thing is that you make sure the client can listen to you,” she says. This flexibility is something she considers self-evident in her job.
Communication remains central when working with development. If clients and developers have different ideas, she works with the team to find the best way to achieve the goal. What’s important to her is that the solution ultimately works and is truly meaningful for the customer.

Becoming better together

In addition to client work, another aspect has become particularly important for Gerlinde: passing on knowledge to younger colleagues. For her, there’s something special about seeing others grow and gain confidence. She is especially proud when former junior colleagues now independently appear with clients. “That’s my highlight,” she says – a sign that working together has an impact.
