Precise location details in Dynamics 365 Field Service thanks to What3Words integration

Pinpoint, clear location descriptions? This functionality is essential in service - and yet is missing from the standard capabilities of most service management systems.

One of our clients also faced this challenge. Although their service teams successfully used Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service, they struggled to guide field staff to addressless locations, such as wind turbines. Our solution: seamlessly integrating What3Words into their existing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service system. Now, pinpointing locations and navigating to them is a breeze.

Our team first created a field under “Functional Location” for precise location descriptions. Free text descriptions such as “Warehouse gate 5” or “Wind turbine B525-1” can be entered here. Beneath it, the “What3Words Coordinate” field stores the three-word address defined by What3Words for the precise location.

What is What3Words?

What3Words is an addressing system that divides the entire world into 3×3 meter squares, assigning each square a unique three-word combination. These three-word addresses are easy to remember, communicate, and use. For example, they can be easily entered using voice recognition. The precise three-word description proves particularly advantageous for navigating to remote locations or identifying specific entrances on large industrial sites.

Pinpoint navigation that also works offline.

Instead of relying on complicated, error-prone directions in the notes section, field staff can simply use the What3Words navigation point added in Dynamics 365 Field Service. The What3Words map opens, allowing users to open standard navigation tools such as Google Maps. The best part is that navigation also works offline, thanks to the What3Words compass mode or offline navigation apps such as Navmii. This is a game changer, especially for remote locations!
